Not all jewelry is created equal. We’ve probably all had that experience of buying something that looked gorgeous online, only for it to turn green on our wrist after a week. So frustrating! Here are 7 things to check so you NEVER get caught out again.
- Check for Hallmarks
Hallmarks are tiny stamps that tell you what the jewelry is made of. On silver, look for “925” — this means 92.5% pure silver (also called sterling silver). No markings at all is a red flag. - Look at the Finish
Good quality jewelry should have an even, smooth finish all over — including on the back. If the back looks rough while the front is polished, the quality is likely not great. - Check the Weight
Quality jewelry has a satisfying weight to it. Completely weightless pieces are often a sign of very thin plating that won’t last long. - Look at the Clasps and Closures
Does the clasp click securely? Does it feel sturdy? A cheap clasp that barely closes is one of the quickest ways to lose a piece of jewelry. - Ask About Nickel Content
Nickel is a common allergen found in cheap jewelry that can cause skin reactions — redness, itching and rashes. Good quality jewelry will be nickel free. Always check if you have sensitive skin! - Read the Product Description Carefully
“Gold coloured” is very different from “gold plated” which is very different from “solid gold.” Read carefully and if the material isn’t clearly stated — ask! Reputable sellers are always transparent. - Check the Reviews
Look for reviews mentioning how the jewelry held up over time. “Still looks great after 6 months” is reassuring. “Turned green after a week” — run!
At Glittering Bloom, all our pieces are made from high quality goldplated brass, stainless steel or 925 sterling silver. We are completely nickel free and every piece is carefully selected for quality and beauty. Because you deserve jewelry that lasts! 💎
